Your digestive issues are absolutely ruining your day.
You can’t focus on your job tasks, you find you’re anxious about upcoming social activities, you’re hesitant to be intimate with your partner, you’re absolutely terrified to leave your house, and you’re even fearful to eat the foods you once loved!
Digestive upset can range from mild to severe and may manifest with symptoms such as:
The tummy problems my clients struggle with often have evolved over a lifetime and can fluctuate from being mild to more severe as time goes on.
Many of the clients who come to my practice have been diagnosed with:
Simply identifying these diagnoses is often just the start of a person’s healing journey to fix their digestive problems for good.
So what’s causing these digestive issues in the first place?
There could be any number of reasons triggering your digestive upset. The truth is, digestive issues can be very complex and it’s often a number of different factors contributing to your gut symptoms.
Below, I’ll outline the most common factors I see in my practice that could be overlooked by your doctor’s office.
It’s been stated that up to 70-80% of your immune system actually resides in your gut! That immune system is referred to as Gut Associated Lymphoid Tissue, or GALT–it’s the largest immune network in the body.
GALT decides if your body has a reaction to a food or chemical; this inflammatory reaction is referred to as a Food Sensitivity.
Food Sensitivity reactions can result in gut symptoms you’re likely familiar with, like:
Food Sensitivity reactions come on gradually and it may take up to 48 – 72 hours to experience symptoms. That’s why these sensitivities are so hard to pinpoint!
These reactions can also be dose dependent, complicating matters even further.
Food sensitivities can occur with ANY food or chemical. This means even healthy foods you eat such as spinach, salmon, or turmeric could be causing an unhealthy immune reaction in your gut!
In addition, it’s common to see sensitivities to chemicals in foods such as:
The good news is that food sensitivities are NOT permanent. Once we heal your body’s immune system, the number of food sensitivities you experience will diminish over time.
Identifying Food Sensitivities is one of the most important things you can do to relieve your digestive issues.
Your Gastrointestinal Tract (GI Tract) is the largest area where the body meets the outside environment.
As discussed above, your GALT (Gut Associated Lymphoid Tissue) is the primary point where immune reactions in your gut occur in response to whatever your body sees as potential outside threat.
Environmental exposures can include any number and combination of chemicals we’re exposed to on a daily basis.
The common Environmental Exposures your gut faces daily can come from:
It’s important to note that many of the food additives approved in the U.S. are actually banned in Europe. Also, many food additives have not been scientifically reviewed in decades for their safety.
The thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and mental attitudes about your health can actually positively or negatively affect your body at a biological level.
That’s because your body sends out chemical signals in response to each thought you’re thinking.
There’s an exciting new field of research called psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) that looks at the interaction of how your thoughts actually impact the functioning of your immune system (remember that up to 70-80% of your immune system resides in your gut!).
I know this to be true because I see it all the time in the clients I work with. They’re at their wits-end to try and figure out a solution as to why they can’t manage their digestive symptoms.
And who can blame them? I know it’s SUPER frustrating to not be able to make sense of symptoms or figure out why your body isn’t cooperating like you think it should.
The problem, however, is that the very thoughts and never-ending stress they experience around their gut issue can be actually compounding their problem even further.
What to do?
There are a few ways I recommend cultivating a healthy mind-body relationship:
You can read more about this topic and get a free meditation to cultivate a healthy mind-body connection from me here.
The gut microbiome is the diverse combination of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoa that are found in a person’s digestive tract.
Research has found that patients with IBS have changes in the gut microbiome, or dysbiosis, which can influence intestinal inflammation and pain.
Whenever a patient experiences an imbalance in the gut microbiome, the gut lining is compromised and chronic inflammation occurs. Furthermore, pathogens are more likely to take hold as the normal flora balance has been disrupted.
In my practice, I utilize a comprehensive stool test that measures imbalances of normal flora, gut infections, and gut functioning all in one! With this test we can actually SEE what’s going on inside the gut and rebalance as necessary.
You could try to navigate your digestive issues on your own, not get the results you want, feel frustrated and continue to suffer from your digestive pain and discomfort.
OR
You could work with a gut health professional and be confident that the foods you’re eating are working 100% in your favor, get a customized protocol that’s curated just for you, get faster results, experience a significant reduction in symptoms, have more energy, and feel like a new person inside and out.
